Argentina: Commercial ambassadors role aims to boost global expansion
In an effort to strengthen Argentina’s presence in international markets and attract strategic investments, the country’s national government has created the international role of Commercial Ambassador for Investments and Strategic Development through its release of Decree 43/2025.
The role aims to promote business opportunities, facilitate foreign trade, and strengthen the connection between Argentine companies and key global players.
The creation of the role follows similar models that already exist in other countries, such as trade envoys in the UK, and special presidential envoys for trade and investment in the US, which serve similar functions by promoting investments and facilitating access to strategic markets, with varying scopes.
This role plays an advisory and facilitation role in international trade and investments, often without holding a formal position in the foreign service. The key distinction in Argentina is that this role is protocol-based, temporary, and ad honorem – something that is not always the case in other countries.
Commercial ambassadors will be selected based on their experience in the business sector and will act ad honorem, with no employment relationship with the state. Their primary role will be to attract investments, facilitate market expansion, and strengthen Argentina’s presence in international forums, trade missions, and strategic events, with the aim of increasing the country’s global footprint.
Furthermore, the new role will contribute to the development of regional economies and key sectors such as technology, energy, and infrastructure. Additionally, their proposals will serve as advisory recommendations and will not be obligatory for the national government or its agencies.
The protocol recognition will be temporary and will not grant diplomatic powers or official positions within foreign service. All costs associated with their activities will be fully covered by the commercial ambassadors themselves.
The measure aims to position Argentina as a key player in global trade by leveraging its productive potential and the growing international demand for emerging markets.
