ESG disputes and investment protection: the pursuit of a delicate balance through third-party funding?

Join us for the opening conference of the DLA Piper Milan Investment Arbitration Pre-Moot on Friday, 10 May 2024 at 9:00 (CET), in person, at our offices in Milan. Through leading arbitration specialists, the conference will touch upon some of the most challenging issues of the case study of the 16th Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court (FIAMC). 

A networking rooftop cocktail reception will be hosted at the DLA Piper Milan’s terrace on Friday evening after the rounds of hearings (from 19:30 CET): it will be opened to all mooties, arbitrators, speakers and participants to the conference who wish to join.

Pietro Franzina

Full Professor of International Law, Università Cattolica di Milano
Pietro Franzina holds the chair of Private International Law at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, where he also teaches Business and Human Rights, and the Law and Practice of Arbitration

Luigi Crema

Professor of International Law, Università degli Studi di Milano
Professor of International Law at the Law School of the Università degli Studi of Milan. He holds a joint PhD in Public International Law from the Universities of Geneva and Milan and was a fellow at the Jean Monnet Center of the New York University School of Law and at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He is the President of the LLM on Sustainable Development of the Università degli Studi di Milano.

Jorian Hamster

DLA Piper
International disputes lawyer at DLA Piper, with a strong focus on emerging markets and ESG disputes in the energy and natural resources sector. With a background in International and European law and many years of experience in corporate disputes, Jorian is uniquely positioned to help businesses navigate human rights, biodiversity and climate change risks in operations across the developing world. He considered a leading figure on human rights & environmental due diligence.

Irene Petrelli

Partner, Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP
Member of Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle LLP International Arbitration group and leads the Italian arbitration team. Her practice focuses on investment treaty arbitration, international commercial arbitration, and public international law disputes. Ms. Petrelli has represented sovereign States and State-owned entities in connection with international arbitrations under the leading institutional and ad hoc arbitration rules.

Alessandro Boso Caretta

DLA Piper
Partner at DLA Piper, Alessandro has a wide experience in regulation and competition, both on transactional and contentious matters, with a focus on technology, life sciences, telecommunications and network industries. He has extensive experience in assisting clients in proceedings before regulatory and antitrust authorities as well as in regulatory and antitrust advice and litigation. His practice also covers consumer protection issues, including the areas of unfair commercial practices and class action.

Alice Fremuth-Wolf

Nivalion
Market Head of Austria & the CEE region at Nivalion. She was Secretary General of the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC) for 10 years. She is a lecturer for arbitration at the Institute of Civil Procedure Law at the Law Faculty of Vienna University, and frequently acts as guest lecturer. She has authored numerous articles and books on arbitration and ADR. In addition to her academic career, she worked as an associate for the leading law firms Wolf Theiss and Baker McKenzie in Vienna where she passed the Austrian bar exam, acting as counsel and arbitrator in international arbitration and mediation cases.

Roslyn Lai

No Impunity
Head of Legal at No Impunity, a London-based impact litigation exchange that financially supports proceedings based on environmental damage and corporate human rights abuses in the Global South. Former LLM student at Tsinghua University (Young ICCA scholarship recipient), she previously interned at an international law firm's arbitration group and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and is greatly interested in commercial and investment arbitration developments in Asia Pacific and Greater China regions.
