About

Linzi Penman is a technology lawyer with over 7 years experience advising international private and public companies on matters relating to IT, commercial and data protection issues, with a particular focus on the Financial Services, Consumer Goods, Retail, Media and Entertainment sectors.

Linzi has assisted in several significant outsourcing and complex technology transactions; this work has involved business critical projects some of which have been valued in the hundreds of millions of pounds. Having gained considerable experience across a variety of matters, Linzi has invaluable insight and understanding of her clients’ needs and uses Design Thinking and Lean Six Sigma processes to find the right solution for each transaction.

Supporting the implementation phase across several global data protection compliance projects for some of the firm’s key clients, Linzi also has experience of producing pragmatic documents to ensure mature compliance with the data protection requirements. She has also negotiated complex data protection terms with some of the largest Silicon Valley tech vendors to ensure pragmatic compliance with the global myriad of data protection rules in line with her client's risk profile. Linzi has spent time seconded to DLA Piper's offices in Madrid and Washington D.C, and collaborates internationally with data protection colleagues in London, Amsterdam, Poland, Romania and Germany to provide consistent and pragmatic input on topical matters including AdTech, App User journey reviews (including cookie compliance, marketing consents and privacy notices) and data transfers. She was instrumental in launching Privacy Scorebox 2.0 - a global tool to assess and benchmark an organisation's level of data protection maturity: https://www.dlapiperdataprotection.com/scorebox/.

In 2021, Linzi was seconded to an investment firm and assisted them with negotiations relating to several business critical SaaS solutions, including an investment data management platform to deliver a consolidated source of real-time investment data, as part of its drive towards a simplified cloud infrastructure. This work extending into assisting the firm to revamp its regulatory checklist in light of Brexit and ESMA Outsourcing to the Cloud guidelines.

EXPERIENCE

  • Sought out by clients specifically for our credentials, Linzi continues to be involved in trailblazing and pioneering projects, including representing Scottish Water on its £60 million innovative procurement for a provider of consultancy, advisory and strategic transformational services (involving parallel negotiations with E&Y and McKinsey) - which includes goals to provide service excellence across various environments, leadership in mitigating climate change and great value and finical sustainability.
  • Led negotiations on behalf of a longstanding financial service client with a professional service and resource augmentation tender - condensing the client’s number of suppliers to 5 main suppliers, negotiating in parallel with: Accenture, HCL, Infosys, TCS and WIPRO - using the opportunity to deploy a “best of breed” approach to drive an inherent degree of competition.
  • Supporting a large consumer good client on negotiations for a significant cloud migration for call centre services, as part of a wider strategic move to the cloud. Also supporting the client to navigate the higher-risk consumer marketing field and the data protection considerations in harnessing various types of technology i.e. use of data brokers, Facebook Custom / Lookalike Audiences and email pixels.
  • Leading on the renegotiation of a contract for business critical telecommunications and contact centre services underpinning the entirety of the tech clients business and the manner in which it serves its end customers; being paramount in proposing improved service levels a to ensure the performance regime has teeth.
  • Leading negotiations to assist a media company reshape its contractual arrangements for its most business critical transmission outsourcing service; drafting a framework agreement to outsource technology for transmission services / playout services – reflecting the increasingly complex business environment with a particular focus on topical issues including: (a) changes to the data protection landscape in light of Brexit and recent enforcement trends; (b) audit and step-in and other remediation efforts in a multi-vendor SaaS solution landscape; and (c) sustainability and other ESG contractual commitments. Also supported another media company with a competitive procurement of a revised baseband coding and transmission service contract (with BT the successful bidder), utilising the compression technology, cloud based processing and IP distribution to enable the delivery of encoding and multiplexing services and separately distribution services to carry the multiplex signals from the datacentres to the input of transmitters.

  • In 2022, Linzi was appointed as a board member of Society for Computers and Law's Digital Content Board.
  • Linzi is part of the firm’s Women in Technology committee in the UK and helps to organise events to foster debate and discussion on topical technology issues - such as the connected consumer and NFTs; and regularly contributes articles to DLA Piper Privacy Matters and other publications, including DLA Piper’s Technology’s Legal Edge.
  • On a final note, in 2020, Linzi was selected as one of eight representatives comprising the firm’s IPT global shadow management committee, feeding into senior leadership on key issues impacting associates in the group.
