Michael Sorensen is a Policy Advisor in the firm’s Government Affairs and Public Policy practice. Prior to joining DLA Piper, Michael served as senior staff and director of operations to former US Senator Richard Burr.
Michael brings extensive Capitol Hill experience and industry contacts which he leverages to serve our clients, specifically in the health care and life sciences, higher education, and emerging technology fields. During his time in the Senate, Michael played a key role in both policy development and legislative strategy for Senator Burr. He directed Senator Burr’s personal office staff and managed relationships with bipartisan members and legislative staff of various committees, including the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
In his capacity as a member of Senator Burr’s HELP Committee minority staff, Michael liaised with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), and the Departments of Education and Labor to assist in the Committee’s oversight of the Biden Administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and consideration of the President's nominees.
During Senator Burr’s tenure as Chairman of the Intelligence Committee and more recently as a senior committee member, Michael executed Committee engagements with Intelligence Community partners, organized foreign delegation meetings, and coordinated numerous congressional delegation trips abroad.
