Why I Lawyer: Q&A with Kathleen Ruhland

Why did you decide to become a lawyer?

I started out my career as a CPA working with the Big 4 accounting firms. I was interested in business and working with large multinational companies, and I realized an advanced degree would be beneficial. I chose law school, as I am a problem solver, and the logical analysis part of the law was a draw for me. My accounting background also benefits my transactional work.

How has being a lawyer helped you in other areas of your life?

Being a lawyer has led to such an interesting career. I have met and worked with so many amazing colleagues and clients throughout the world. My longtime friends and colleagues are now leaders of some of the world’s largest corporations, and this has given me a true global mindset. Being a lawyer has also given me the tools to address challenges and be solution driven in both my work and everyday life.

How do you develop a collaborative approach with your clients?

At one point in my career, I worked as in-house counsel for a large multinational company. Understanding the challenges our clients face has made me a better lawyer and a better listener. I use these skills every day in leading global deals.

What differentiates you in regard to the services you offer?

Having a global mindset, being client service-oriented and truly enjoying working with our clients and colleagues on some of the most interesting transactions. In my role as global co-chair of the Corporate practice at DLA Piper, I am able to effectively bring our firm’s extensive resources to our clients. The ability to be a strategic business partner – and our collaborative team approach – is truly a differentiator.
