 Alice Adu Gyamfi focuses her practice on international commercial and investment arbitration and investigations. Ms. Gyamfi has represented sovereign states, individuals and multinational companies in arbitrations under leading institutional and ad hoc rules such as the ICC, ICSID, AAA/ICDR and UNCITRAL Rules.

Ms. Gyamfi is a dedicated pro bono advocate. Notable representations include advising the South Sudan Ministry of Justice on implementing transitional justice processes and drafting the implementing legislation for its Commission on Truth, Reconciliation and Healing.

EXPERIENCE

Arbitration
  • Representing a U.S. energy giant against a multi-national electric utility company, in an ICC arbitration related to the maintenance of a natural gas turbine. 
  • Representing a Gulf state-owned public water and electricity company in an ICC arbitration concerning the breach of a tender contract. 
  • Representing a Gulf pharmaceutical company in an OIC arbitration against another Gulf State in relation to a blockade in the Middle East. Award remains pending.
  • Represented a global apparel company in an ICC arbitration against the national soccer federation of a South American country.
  • Represented the Sultanate of Oman and defeating multi-million-dollar claims by a Saudi investor pursuant to the OIC Agreement concerning a construction project and a separate claim by a US investor pursuant to the US-Oman Free Trade Agreement concerning lease agreement and mining rights, resulting in a complete dismissal of Claimant’s claims. (Omar Bin Sulaiman Abdual Aziz Al Rajhi v. the Sultanate of Oman, PCA Case No. 2017-32).
  • Represented a major multinational technology company in an ICC arbitration over its claims for breach of representations and warranties in an acquisition agreement and indemnification of several patent litigations. The arbitration was discontinued following a favorable settlement for our client.
  • Represented an upstream and renewable energy sector client in an English-language US$100 million ICC arbitration arising out of a methanol plant project. The case was discontinued following a settlement agreement between the parties. 
Investigations
  • Conducted a comprehensive internal investigation of corporate supply chain protocols for a multinational pharmaceutical company related to its operations in central Asia.
  • Advised a US defense contractor on International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and other State Department controlled goods regulations.
Litigation and arbitration
  • In re Zantac (Ranitidine) Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2924 (SD. Fla.): Serving as co-national counsel for Sanofi in multi district litigation involving thousands of cancer claims and medical monitoring, third party payor and consumer fraud class actions.
