DLA Piper advises on landmark handover of UK's first expiring healthcare PFI project

As the UK’s healthcare PFI projects begin to expire, DLA Piper has successfully guided Walker Healthcare through the historic transfer of the Meadows community hospital back into public ownership. This milestone marks the first healthcare PFI project to reach its conclusion and return to NHS Trusts, 25 years after its inception.

The seamless transition was achieved through the collaborative efforts of all parties, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of high-quality services to elderly patients.

"DLA Piper's innovative approach, collaborative philosophy, and unwavering determination were pivotal in ensuring a smooth and timely handover," said Jim McCallum, Director of Walker Healthcare.

Opened in 1999, the Meadows specialises in mental health and care services for the elderly. The project was a pioneering PFI initiative led by Walker Healthcare, in partnership with Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Jim McCallum expressed gratitude for DLA Piper’s steadfast support, highlighting the contributions of Ben Morton, Natalie Dalton, Alison Fagan, and Jenny Harrison. “DLA Piper's expertise and dedication, anticipating potential obstacles and actively driving the process, were instrumental in this successful transition,” he added.

This handover provides DLA Piper and Walker Healthcare with invaluable experience and insights for future PFI project expirations, with most contracts set to conclude from 2025 onwards.
