DLA Piper advises Novar on financing of largest solar park in the Netherlands

DLA Piper has advised Novar on the financing of Zonnepark Eekerpolder, set to become the largest solar park in the Netherlands. With a capacity of nearly 200 MWp and an investment of over EUR100 million, the project marks a major milestone in advancing the country’s energy transition.

Located in Groningen, the solar park spans more than 160 hectares, with construction beginning in February 2025. The project emphasizes collaboration with local communities and authorities, ensuring landscape integration, biodiversity enhancement, and public accessibility, including new cycling routes and open green spaces.

Zonnepark Eekerpolder is part of an innovative energy landscape that combines solar energy with future battery storage located in the center of an operating wind farm. In the project area a high-voltage distribution station is under construction by Novar to alleviate grid congestion, enabling efficient energy distribution and supporting regional sustainability goals.

Gerard Kneppers, lead partner at DLA Piper, commented: "This project is not just about renewable energy – it represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainability, community engagement, and innovation. It’s a milestone for the Dutch energy transition and underscores the potential of initiatives that drive us toward a greener, more sustainable future."
