Jonathan advises on public and private mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and general corporate matters. His M&A practice has a particular focus on cross-border transactions. Jonathan has advised high-profile clients in the mining and energy, telecommunications, financial services, industrials and retail sectors.

Jonathan joined DLA Piper as a Director in January 2024.

  • Harmony Gold – on its USD600m acquisition of AngloGold Ashanti’s South African mines and USD100m equity capital raise.*
  • ATON – on its attempted hostile takeover of Murray & Roberts for c. ZAR4.25bn.*
  • Merrill Lynch (BofA) – on its underwriting and joint bookrunning of a potential rights issue by Sasol.*
  • Rio Tinto – on its prospecting and earn-in arrangements in South Africa.*
  • African Rainbow Minerals – on its South African coal transactions with Glencore.*
  • Capital Appreciation – on its specific repurchase and related party transactions for c. ZAR250mn.*
  • We Company – on South African aspects of a potential IPO.*
  • ETG Group – on its sale of a strategic minority stake to Mitsui for c. USD265m.*
  • Fairfax Africa – on its acquisition of majority stake in Nova and potential take private of a South African listed company in the renewable and industrials sectors.*
