About
Luke Mooney has notable experience in complex insurance, reinsurance (facultative and treaty) and general commercial dispute resolution, including civil litigation, institutional and ad hoc arbitration proceedings and mediation. 

He has particular knowledge in advising U.K. and international clients on complex, high value insurance and reinsurance coverage issues. Luke has experience across a variety of classes of business, including aviation, property, liability, trade credit, cyber and financial lines.  

He has also worked in the firm’s Dubai and New York offices, and has been recognised by the legal directories for a number of years.

EXPERIENCE

  • Acting for insurers and reinsurers in relation to aviation exposures arising from the Russia/Ukraine conflict across England, Ireland and the United States.
  • Advising London reinsurers following the loss of LaMia Flight 2933 near Medellin, Colombia, including in respect of proceedings in England, the United States and Brazil.
  • Acting for London reinsurers in respect of the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines MH370.
  • Acting for London reinsurers in connection with other complex and high-profile aviation-related coverage losses and disputes, including the shoot-down of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 over Tehran in January 2020 the shoot-down of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, the crash of Egyptair Flight MS804.
  • Defending a leading London Market insurer in relation to Covid-19 business interruption losses (Bellini (N/E) Ltd trading as Bellini v Brit UW Limited [2023] EWHC 1545 (Comm)).
  • Advising an international reinsurer in arbitration proceedings relating to a quota share retrocession treaty.
  • Acting for a major international reinsurer in successful international arbitration proceedings concerning claims under a property treaty reinsurance contract arising out of the Grenfell Tower disaster in London in 2017.
  • Advising numerous UK and international insurers in connection with COVID-19 related claims exposures across multiple classes of direct insurance business, including property damage and business interruption, travel, personal accident and health, trade credit, contingency and event cancellation.
