About

Alex Kaplan represents real estate clients across a variety of transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, financings, and ground leases. He advises cross-border investors on acquiring fee, equity, and mortgage and mezzanine debt interests in trophy office, industrial, multifamily, and retail properties throughout the United States. Alex helps clients navigate the differences across legal regimes and investment environments to achieve optimal results.

Alex also advises clients in the acquisition, financing, and development of data center and logistics, sports, pharmaceutical, hospitality, healthcare, and self-storage facilities with real estate transactional needs unique to those sectors. In addition, he counsels clients on corporate governance matters with real estate development and ownership.

  • Represented a Saudi investor in the acquisition of a 95% interest in a medical office building located at 2115 Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, D.C., valued at US$87 million.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its US$370 million acquisition of the commercial and retail portions of a development in uptown Dallas and related US$222 million mortgage financing.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its US$905 million sale of a seven-million square foot logistics portfolio located throughout the US and leased to Fortune 500 companies.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its US$480 million acquisition of a 49% interest in Midtown Center in Washington, DC, the headquarters of a government-sponsored enterprise, from a real estate firm.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its US$134 million acquisition of a hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its US$400 million acquisition of a 49% interest in a New York property from a global financial institution.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its acquisition of a hotel in New York and a hotel in Washington, DC for US$60 million and US$20 million, respectively.

  • Represented a non-US investor in its origination of a US$62 million mezzanine loan to the owner of a hotel in Miami. 
  • Represented a non-US investor in its origination of a US$100 million mezzanine loan to the leasehold owner of a transportation station in Washington, DC.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its US$100 million acquisition of a joint venture interest from a financial services company to invest in multifamily, industrial, and office assets.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its original mezzanine loan totaling US$215 million in aggregate to a real estate developer, the owner of two multifamily properties in New York.
  • Represented a non-US investor in its US$190 million acquisition of a mezzanine loan related to One Worldwide Plaza in New York.
