Lucas Blum specializes in advising on and providing ongoing support for strategic and innovative digital transformation projects and data-driven applications.

With extensive experience in guiding digitalization projects, he is a trusted advisor on all aspects of digital transformation. His focus is on ensuring legally compliant data usage, addressing both data protection requirements and the obligations set forth under EU data regulations, particularly the EU Data Act.

As co-lead of DLA Piper's international EU Digital Decade Task Force, he tackles the challenges posed by the EU’s data and cybersecurity strategy for clients.

His deep expertise in data and cybersecurity law is particularly valued by clients when navigating complex issues related to IoT, data analytics, AI, and ensuring robust cybersecurity measures.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advising a client in the automotive industry on the introduction of a new business model (services ‘on-demand’) and the associated data processing.
  • Ongoing data protection advice to a global market leader in the field of tools manufacturing on the digital transformation and introduction of networked products and digital applications (including apps), in particular on the requirements of data protection law and the Data Act.
  • Advising on the data protection-compliant implementation of test drives in the field of autonomous driving and coordinating the audit in 30+ countries.
  • Advising on cyber incidents/data protection incidents and communicating with authorities.
  • Advising on the introduction of fleet management systems in the EU and the transfer of data to third countries.
  • Advising on the data protection-compliant processing of customer data (using AI) and the introduction of AI tools.
  • Advising a global real estate company on the introduction and contractual design of services related to connected buildings (Smart Buildings), in particular concerning the Data Act, data protection requirements and cybersecurity.

    Prior Experience

    Before joining DLA Piper in 2020, Lucas Blum worked for a law firm in the field of data protection and it law in Berlin (2018-2020). Prior to that, he gained professional experience in the Innovation Lab of a German automotive manufacturer in Silicon Valley, California (2018). During his legal traineeship (2015-2017) Lucas worked inter alia for an international law firm in Berlin (Intellectual Property and Technology practice group) and the German Embassy Canberra, Australia.
