Over $26.3 million in government funding announced for construction of Greater ‎Toronto Area Tamil Community Centre

On July 16, 2021, federal, provincial and municipal governments announced over $26.3 million in funding for the construction of a new, multi-purpose Tamil Community Centre (TCC) in Scarborough, Ontario. In addition, the City of Toronto has contributed land valued at $25M by way of Lease Agreement for $1 per year, while TCC will be contributing over $9.6 million to the project.

The multi-purpose TCC will serve as a hub for community members of not only Tamil heritage, but the overarching diverse community of Greater Toronto. The centre will streamline services that address the needs of the local community as well as facilitate education, events, cultural activities and  recreational sports.

“We are thrilled for the leadership of TCC and acknowledge that this is a massive achievement for the community.  The countless hours spent, and leadership demonstrated by Siva Vimalachandran, TCC Project Chair, and the TCC Board of Directors, will ensure that an underserved community receives access to invaluable space, services and support,” Ted Maduri, Chair, DLA Piper (Canada) LLP Corporate Group.

Of the project, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister of Finance, on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, said “The new Tamil Community Centre will create jobs, give the community access to recreational and cultural spaces, connect the community to quality programs and services, and provide access to educational opportunities for everyone in the community”.

DLA Piper (Canada) LLP is proud to have acted as legal advisor to TCC in various capacities since its inception including in various pro bono matters. The DLA Piper team has included: Ted Maduri and the corporate services group; Kate Bake-Patterson and Sandra Mah, assisting with TCC’s charitable status application; and Lee Axford, advising on real estate matters.
