Companies operating in the consumer goods and retail sector have long faced pressure to commit to international human rights instruments such as the UN Global Compact, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and International Labour Organization conventions. With growing acceptance of these principles, labor unions, NGOs and activists now are looking to turn corporate commitments into legal obligations subject to arbitration and enforcement – which can lead to financial liability, brand damage, and new risks and obligations.
