Nick Valentine is the head of DLA Piper's Technology and Data team in New Zealand. He is a highly regarded practitioner with extensive experience in technology transactions and is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading data protection and cybersecurity lawyers. Nick advises public and private sector entities on the full range of technology transactions, including digital transformation, AI-adoption, strategic sourcing, and software development and licensing. He also regularly advises on data protection and cybersecurity; telecommunications and technology regulation; and brand protection.

Nick is ranked by Legal 500 as a Next Generation Partner for both Technology, Media and Telecommunications, and Data Protection. His clients value his commercial approach – combining technical excellence with an ability to make the complex simple and understand the strategic objectives of a deal.

  • Advised various developers, suppliers, and customers of AI-enabled solutions in the health sector.
  • Advised a New Zealand insurer on the procurement and implementation of a new cloud-based claims management system from an insurance SaaS provider.
  • Advised a foreign government on all aspects of New Zealand privacy, cybersecurity, and surveillance/intelligence law.
  • Advised a New Zealand insurer on the engagement of a third party to improve its cyber defence capability.
  • Advised a financial services client on the procurement of a hosted investment operations platform.
  • Advised OTT live sport streaming platform Spark Sport on various broadcasting rights acquisition deals.
