DLA Piper’s International Arbitration Co-Chair Michael Ostrove relocates to the New York office

Michael Ostrove, Global Co-Chair of DLA Piper’s International Arbitration Practice, has relocated to New York from Paris. Widely recognized as a leader in the field, Ostrove has led high-profile commercial and investment disputes for more than 30 years and helped build a market-leading arbitration team in Paris.

Ostrove routinely acts as lead counsel in commercial and investment arbitrations on behalf of sovereign states, companies and individuals. He has advised on issues under a wide array of bilateral investment treaties, the Energy Charter Treaty, and national investment laws. Michael has extensive experience with arbitrations administered by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), and the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), as well as with ad hoc arbitrations pursuant to the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. He currently serves as a Vice President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and as a member of the World Bank Sanctions Board.

Ostrove has deep litigation experience before French, US, and other national and regional courts, such as the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA) Cour Commune de Justice et d’Arbitrage and the Court of Justice of the European Union. His litigation work primarily relates to enforcement and annulment of arbitral awards. He has worked extensively on multi-national corruption investigations for both corporations and state authorities.

Well-regarded for his work managing complex international arbitration matters, particularly across Francophone Africa, Ostrove led a team in obtaining a landmark win for the Republic of Guinea in its multi-billion euro investment arbitration against international diversified mining company BSGR, one of the most complex arbitrations in Africa’s history.

“We are delighted to welcome Michael to the New York office. He is a leader in the international arbitration field, and we’re confident that clients all over the world will continue to benefit from his deep experience and tremendous advocacy,” said Loren Brown, DLA Piper’s US Vice Chair and Chair of the US Disputes Practice.

“Michael is a true leader in the field of international arbitration, an excellent advocate, a serious strategist, and a trusted voice,” said Kate Brown de Vejar, Global Co-Chair of the firm’s International Arbitration Practice. “It is fortunate for our US practice that his personal center of gravity brings him back to New York, offering a unique opportunity to create even closer collaboration between our Americas team and our European and African practices.”
