Janice Li is currently an associate in DLA Piper's Hong Kong litigation and regulatory practice. She is a solicitor admitted in the High Court of Hong Kong and also a US attorney qualified to practice law in the New York State.

Ms. Li's practice focuses on international arbitration and commercial litigation. She has handled disputes covering areas including financial instruments, licensing and distribution, construction, insurance, international trade and sale of goods, shipping, energy and natural resources and general commercial disputes in the High Court of Hong Kong, and arbitrations seated in jurisdictions including Hong Kong, London, the US and Mainland China.

Ms. Li has advised clients in all aspects of disputes including asset preservation, injunctions, as well as enforcement of arbitral awards in various jurisdictions.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advised and acted on behalf of a Hong Kong-listed company in the infrastructure construction business in an application to set aside a default judgment in the Hong Kong Court.
  • Acting for a well-known shipping company in a dispute arising from a charterparty involving a vessel trapped in Ukraine for a long time due to the Russo-Ukrainian war with claim value exceeding USD40 million.
  • Acting for a Hong Kong-listed asset management and investment company in an arbitration at the HKIAC in relation to de-SPAC investment and exercise of put-option in a NASDAQ-listed company. Successfully obtained asset preservation orders from the Chinese Court in aid of arbitration proceedings in Hong Kong.
  • Acting for a Singaporean trading company in a charterparty dispute under LMAA rules against a Swiss trading company.
  • Acting for a China-based company specialising in commodity trading in a sale of goods dispute arising out of a contract for sale and purchase of Russian coking coal, against the backdrop of extreme volatility in coal prices in 2021. Successfully obtained a favourable award in the LMAA arbitration and thereafter resisted an application by the opponents for leave to appeal that award before the English Court under section 69 of the Arbitration Act 1996.
  • Acting for a Chinese distributor of medical appliances in an HKIAC arbitration brought by the manufacturer of those appliances under a California law-governed exclusive distributorship agreement.
  • Advising a Shenzhen-listed manufacturer of LED products in respect of enforcement of an award issued in the Delaware-seated AAA arbitration brought by a US distributor of those products and a joint venture formed by those two parties, with awarded damages exceeding USD45million.
  • Advising and acting on behalf of a leading PRC steel producer in defending a multimillion-dollar claim brought by a European commodity trading company in a London-seated arbitration on LMAA Terms.
  • Assisting an international engineering and construction company in a Hong Kong-seated arbitration to defend a contribution claim brought against it for its work done as sub-consultant, which arose as a result of a parallel head claim from the employer against the consultant, with claim value exceeding HKD100 million.
  • Advised primary and excess insurers in respect of an insurance claim made under a Construction All-Risk policy arising from the sudden collapse of a historical building in Hong Kong, with claim value exceeding HKD200 million.*
