Andrew Yates is a real estate lawyer with a particular focus on development, the build-to-rent sector and large residential investment.

Andrew advises clients on the finance, purchase and development of some of the UK’s most significant BTR schemes.

He brings an understanding of forward funding, joint ventures and operational management - an area that has become increasingly significant as investors seek scale and specialist management capability. He has a particular interest in international and cross border residential investment.

Andrew also has a long history leading teams on some of the UK’s largest regeneration schemes including public/private joint ventures.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advising Aviva Capital Partners on its 950 residential unit BTR joint venture with Moda Living at the Stone Yard, Digbeth, Birmingham - one of the city’s largest residential led regeneration schemes.
  • Advising Moda Living on the operating platforms for many of its most significant city centre schemes including the award-winning Angel Gardens Manchester, the Lexington Liverpool, the McEwan in Edinburgh, Soyo Leeds and the Mercian, Birmingham. 
  • Advising Beaufort Capital in relation to the financing of developer Artisan’s 6 acre residential development in Leeds, its development on sale to Casa by Moda.
  • Spending over 20 years as lead relationship partner for Government Agency Homes England and its predecessor bodies. Leading the teams advising on some GBP2bn of funding on BTR (build-to-rent) and other residential projects.*
  • Advising La Salle Investment Management on the purchase, forward funding and operation for the Coal Pension Funds of their GBP200m plus schemes at Allegro, Birmingham and Greengate, Manchester as well as the disposal of its PRS Investment Fund.*
  • Advising Transport for London on the creation of and documenting the Connected Living BTR joint venture with Grainger that is delivering over 3000 homes on various sites across London.*
  • Leading the team advising Get Living on some of its most significant new BTR schemes across the UK including the forward purchase and forward funding of the 500 unit New Maker Yards scheme at Middlewood Locks, Manchester.*

Andrew brings with him a unique understanding of the asset class and the ability to help clients who want to become further integrated into the BTR and multifamily community.
  • Andrew is known for his role with industry bodies such as the UK Apartment Association and the British Property Federation. He has been at the forefront of the UK sector since around 2010 when it was in its earliest days as a fledgling asset class. He has led teams dealing with the finance, purchase and development of some of the UK's most significant BTR schemes. He brings an understanding of forward funding, joint ventures and, importantly, operational management - an area that has become increasingly significant as investors seek scale and specialist management capability.
