Laura Shingler has experience in financial crime compliance and investigations, with a particular focus on sanctions, anti-bribery and corruption (ABC), anti-money laundering (AML) and corporate crime.

She acts for leading corporate and financial institutions advising them on a range of regulatory and compliance issues and assisting them with the implementation of robust compliance programmes.

Laura has been ranked for “UAE Corporate Investigations” in Chambers Global 2018-2024, and Legal 500 as a “Rising Star” for Compliance and Investigations. Both categories include bribery and corruption expertise.

EXPERIENCE

  • Advising leading multinational corporations on ABC laws and obligations in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Advising financial and corporate institutions on potential bribery and corruption violations and advising on regulatory expectations and reporting obligations.
  • Conducting detailed due diligence and advising on counterparty and transaction risk and dealings in high risk jurisdictions.
  • Designing and developing sanctions, AML and ABC compliance programmes and drafting policies and procedures for multiple financial and corporate institutions.
  • Conducting sanctions, AML and ABC risk assessments and audits, including for a multinational consumer goods company.
  • Drafting protective sanctions, AML and ABC language in financial and commercial contracts to mitigate sanctions risk.
  • Advising a leading financial services authority in the Middle East on the audit and implementation of a robust internal compliance programme in accordance with local law and international best practice.
  • Advising a global service provider in entertainment and events on the alleged payment of commissions related to projects in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
  • Advising a UK defence contractor in respect of allegations of corruption by the client’s local agent in Saudi Arabia.
  • Advising a global energy services provider on the alleged payment of facilitation fees to a government entity in Qatar.
  • Advising a global transport and logistics company on compliance risks relating to possible breaches of anti-corruption legislation in the UAE and Iraq.
  • Advising a leading multinational car manufacturer on ABC risks and obligations in the UAE and KSA.
  • Advising a multinational engineering company in respect of allegations of unethical business practices within its Saudi Arabian operations and related negotiations with the UK Serious Fraud Office.
  • Advising a leading manufacturing company on allegations of bribery and corruption, tax evasion, breaches of sanctions and export control regulations and dubious business practices at a JV in KSA.
  • Advising a Japanese NGO in Jordan on allegations of fraud, corruption, embezzlement, manipulation of donor funds, harassment, discrimination and favoritism of certain refugees.
  • Advising a leading human resource organisation based in the UAE and Saudi Arabia on alleged misconduct by the Regional General Manager, including allegations related to breach of confidentiality, theft of intellectual property, fraud, misuse of Company resources for personal benefit, and the initiation of a competing business.
