Ana Paula Chagas joins Campos Mello Advogados, strengthening Environmental Law, Climate Change and ESG practice

Chagas joins new additions Paulo Bessa and Vilmar Gonçalves to further develop the firm’s Brazilian and international capabilities

DLA Piper announced today that Ana Paula Chagas has joined Campos Mello Advogados (CMA), which has a cooperation agreement with DLA Piper, as a partner in the Environmental Law, Climate Change and ESG practice.

Chagas brings substantial experience in the renewable energy, infrastructure and mining industries, as well as in agribusiness. She is the latest partner to join CMA’s ESG practice, following the additions of Paulo de Bessa Antunes, an environmental law partner with 30 years’ experience as Regional Federal Prosecutor at the Brazilian Federal Prosecution Office, and Vilmar Gonçalves, an environmental law and strategic litigation partner and Head of Arbitration at CBMA, the Brazilian Center for Mediation and Arbitration, both of whom joined the firm last week.

“ESG and climate change today make up one of the corporate world's most important priorities. The new partners in our Environmental Law, Climate Change and ESG practice will help us meet growing demand from Brazilian and international companies – in recent months, CMA has seen a 50 percent increase in business in these areas,” said CMA managing partner Fábio Campos Mello.

“We are delighted to see Ana Paula Chagas join the Campos Mello Advogados sustainability group,” added partner Paulo Bessa. “Environmental law means care, attention and respect for the Earth and for its inhabitants, and Ana's experience and perspective will help reinforce our commitment to ESG through our service to our clients.”

“ESG and climate change are intrinsically linked and are a top priority for today’s boards and CEOs. Taking ESG under consideration in corporate decision-making and strategy have become crucial to business continuity and growth, as investors want to understand all the risks they are taking when they invest in a business," Chagas said.

Chagas holds a master's degree in environmental law from Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne University and is the current chairperson of the Brazilian Bar Association Environmental Commission.
