About

Marcelo Barros focuses on patent litigation in federal courts and post-grant review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). With a background in biomedical engineering (University of Texas at Austin) and bioengineering (University of California, San Diego), Marcelo brings technical versatility to his practice. This versatility shines when working with life sciences, medical devices, as well as electrical and computer technology companies. Marcelo has also been involved in trade secret litigation, representing companies in the energy industry in Federal Court, and advising a global insurance company on California trade secret law.

Prior to law school, Marcelo conducted graduate studies at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute developing a FRET-based biosensor to investigate proteins involved in heart failure. During his graduate studies, Marcelo gained exposure to a variety of wet lab techniques and molecular biology methods. Marcelo also worked for a leading genomic sequencing company as a systems integration engineer, helping to design, analyze, and validate any improvements to the then most current gene sequencing platforms. Marcelo gained meaningful experience in an interdisciplinary environment, working closely with chemists, molecular biologists, biochemists, bioinformaticians, as well as hardware engineers in such fields as optics and imaging.

Marcelo’s pro bono activities have included defending an asylum seeker from Central America facing deportation, representing a tenant facing eviction, and representing veteran claims before the Board for Correction of Naval Records.

Marcelo joined the DLA team from a known IP boutique, having previously worked in post-grant reviews, IP portfolio procurement, and having conducted due diligence for the genomic sequencing sector.
